Referees

WE NEED REFEREES. No previous refereeing or rugby experience is required. Being a rugby referee can be fun, challenging and extremely rewarding. Rugby is unique in that it is a competitive, contact sport at High School and older, with only one Referee on the pitch. That Referee has complete and full authority to administer and manage a match as is required. The rules that govern referees come through the International Rugby Board (IRB) and USA Rugby Laws and Policies. There are also now two Assistant Referees (previously called Touch Judges) that can assist from the side (touch) lines.

The rugby season runs from January through April, and into May for High School Divisions that make the Playoffs. The matches for high school are generally on Friday evenings and for Middle School and youth on Saturday or Sundays. During the season you can expect to spend about 4 to 8 hours a week travelling and refereeing, depending on the matches you sign up for.

The NCYRA is looking for young men and women (high school age or older) that have the time and the desire to be part of one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. Refereeing is an incredibly important part of the rugby experience and we are looking for men and women with the right attitude and commitment to help. Refereeing is more than blowing a whistle, it is about teaching young boys and girls the rules, the ethos, the fair play and the flow of the game. A good Referee is invaluable in raising the quality and caliber of play, and giving the Players the opportunity to learn and excel.

The NCYRA is partnering with the Northern California Rugby Football Union (NCRFU) Referee Society to promote, enhance and develop a strong and enduring Referee program. The web address for the Referee Society is www.pelicanrefs.com or you can contact us at staff@ncyrugby.org or call at (707) 693-8803. We would be happy to talk with you and give you some direction on how to start.

NCYRA Regional Referee Coordinators

Regional Coordinators should be contacted with any issues regarding scheduling referees for High School matches.  Middle School and younger matches are not currently being scheduled through the Regional Coordinators as we still do not have enough referees.  However, perhaps by the end of the year they will be scheduling Middle School matches as the pool of available referees grows.  Thanks.
